As tensions rise in the Middle East, a quiet tragedy is unfolding in Dubai. It isn’t just people who are suffering—their pets are being left behind. As expatriates rush to leave the country, animal shelters are being hit by a massive “abandonment wave.” Reports suggest that some fleeing owners are even asking veterinarians to euthanize their perfectly healthy cats and dogs.
Leaving with a pet has become nearly impossible. With fewer flights available, relocation costs topping $5,000, and strict 21-day quarantine rules, many residents feel they have no choice but to leave their furry family members behind.
The Situation on the Ground
Rescue groups like K9 Friends and Dubai Street Kitties are overwhelmed by desperate calls. Online community pages are also flooded with owners trying to find new homes for their pets at the very last minute.
Pets are being abandoned in parks and outside clinics. In one heartbreaking case, a mother cat and four kittens were left at a shelter with a note: “Because of the situation here, I have to return to my country… I’m sorry to leave them.”
The Law and Local Support
It is important to remember that abandoning a pet is illegal in Dubai and across the UAE, and it carries heavy legal penalties. To help manage the crisis, the Dubai government has reportedly set up 12 self-feeding stations across the city to provide food for animals left on the streets.
War takes a toll on everyone, but these innocent lives should not be forgotten.
