Findley, a small Chilean terrier, is one of the first dogs in the world to be neutered without surgery!
The procedure took place at his home in Santiago, with his owner holding him and offering treats throughout. Later, he scampered off as if nothing had happened.
The procedure is a simple injection that developers describe as an immunocastration vaccine called Egalitte. Leonardo Saenz, a veterinarian and professor at the University of Chile who developed it, explains that the vaccine works by blocking the reproductive hormone – and the best part? It’s reversible and can be used for both male and female dogs after a veterinarian’s prescription and evaluation.
Findley’s owner, Tamara Zamorano, chose the procedure because of its simplicity and the option to reverse it.
“With the other treatment, castration, we were a little afraid,” Zamorano said. “Aside from being simple, it’s reversible, so if we want to breed him when the time is right, we can.”
Findley had no comment on the procedure, though he did squirm a little during the injection. Afterwards, he happily licked the veterinarian’s hand and went on with his day as if nothing had happened.
